On
Sunday 28 May, Cheryl, Dave, Chris Hunter and I did a big circle going
from Ridgecrest to Beatty, to Gold Point, to Bishop and home. Around 444
miles. For those who have not done that, the road past Gold Point, HWY266,
then HWY168 down to Big Pine offers a wide variety of riding. After you
leave the open plains out of Beatty and Gold Point you hit some smooth
winding roads as you start to climb the ridges. Passing the little (pop
5) town of Lida, the road continues and drops down into a valley where
you pick up HWY168. HWY168 offers two separate passes and a combination
of open straights and sections of hair pin windy roads. There was even
a small section of single lane road cut out of boulders. The scenery changed
often going from the desert plains to forest area. In the 444 miles we
went from 5 feet elevation out side Death Valley over 3 or 4 passes going
all the way up to 7200 feet. It really was a great ride with the weather
beautiful, especially following Saturdays wind and cold. Our brief stop in Gold Point for their Memorial Day celebration was timely. We got there just before the flag ceremony. All the people there pulled out 4 or 5 different sized flags and held them. Then they lowered the flag over the court house, and raised a flag from the funeral of a long time vet that lived at Gold Point. The owner of the town swore to his relatives he would raise the flag over Gold Point ever Memorial Day. Lots of Vets in attendance. For those that went to Gold Point in Feb as part of the Cabin Fever Run, there was a major change in the town. ie. there were people there other than US. I've attached a couple of pictures from the ceremony. I'm not Don and Judy, so just go with them.... r/Wade |
