When we woke up Sunday morning at 6 AM, it was cold and what looked
to be foggy. It was tempting to go back under the covers. But when I
started the bike, and heard the engine roar, well, that was all it took.
Hit the paved road, cracked the throttle, a little chilly, but the G-force
and the rumble felt great.
We went to gas up and won $12 in the lotto!
Must be our lucky day, maybe we'll win the AV 50-50 drawing.
As we cruised to Jack in the Box, we
were again thinking about the weather and whether we'd be the only nuts
to show up. Fortunately there were some other hardy souls there, Kim
and Paul. George came shortly after, then Tony and Roger and Bob and
Ann. Jim Werle came to see us off and said "It's not fog, it's Owens
Valley dust." I think he was right.
We had to wait for Kim's ride, Rex, who
was out doing substitute paper boy duty, so we got a bit of a late start.
But thanks to George leading us at Mach 2 speed through Garlock, we
were right on time. When we got off the freeway at J St., most of the
group got away from us at a stop light, and Roger and I were playing
with the throttle a little off the stops. I learned you don't want to
tease Roger with the throttle. Too many years racing experience. You
eat dust.
The people at AV HOG could not have been
more welcoming and friendly. Kind of like a family reunion. Except that
they had the drawings rigged so non of us R/C people won. Maybe next
time we'll take Bland and we'll show them. One of the main points of
the meeting was that we should all volunteer to make the Victory Ride
a success (the brand new first annual Harley-Davidson sponsored Muscular
Dystrophy Association (MDA) fund-raiser). They passed around sign-up
sheets for the different commitees. We had a moment of silence for the
Shuttle heroes.
After the meeting we said good-bye to
Bob and Ann, who were on their way to HD to pick up some parts. The
ride to Domingo's took us through part of the Air Force Base and must
have been a little boring because I felt my wife's helmet hit mine.
It was really fun to be part of such a
large group. We had 2 groups actually of about 20 each. We could see
the first group making the turns and it was like a long train roaring
down the road. I think we overwhelmed the folks at Domingo's. They were
set up for 40 people, but there were more like 60, I think, and we took
over the whole place. If you've never been to Domingo's, you must check
it out. They have wonderful food and the wait staff caters to your every
whim, including keeping the champagne flowing and the jalepenos roasting.
It is interesting to note that members of the Shuttle crew that landed
at Edward's reportedly made a bee-line to Domingo's.
We celebrated Maurice's 75th birthday.
For those of you who don't know Maurice, he is the oldest member of
the AV HOG and my wife proposed to him at the Laughlin Run last year.
They even had a plot going to do away with me. They call him a chick
magnet! Anyway, he's a great guy and God Bless Him.
After stuffing ourselves, we said our
good-byes to our good friends, and took off for 4 corners to get gas.
On the long ride home we were overwhelmed with thirst, so decided to
stop and check out the geological wonder, the cleavage of Red Mountain,
otherwise known as Miss Kitty at the Silver Dollar. I have to say she
has nothing on our own Kim, and Kim's are homegrown. (I hope this doesn't
get me in trouble with Mark who is coming home soon.) If you haven't
been to the Silver Dollar, stop by for a cold one and tell them George
sent you. If they don't know who you are talking about, just tell them
the one with his mouth hanging open. (Too bad I didn't have the camera!)
Seriously, Faith and Tom are nice people who are trying to make a go
of their new business and appreciate our patronage. We wish them luck.
They are open Fri., Sat, and Sun for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
After visiting the Silver Dollar, we rode
home and it was a little sad to see Roger peel off at 395, and Paul
at Downs. George was on his way to check in at Mickey's, don't know
where Tony was headed, but we said our good-byes at JITB and followed
Kim home to check out her Scooter.
All in all, it was a great ride, makings
for some great memories! Can't wait for the next one.
