Many
thanks to Dennis and Wade for planning this memorable ride... and for arranging fun accommodations: Wonderful classic lodging with courtyard to relax in, good dinners and breakfasts, The Midway, Julian, Mt. Palomar,... |
|
Most
folks ignored the last minute erroneous posting to the HOG calendar about
where to meet for the ride! There we were, Judy and Don, at Jack-in-the-Box
well before 8 AM...all by our lonesomes! At 8:15 AM...we headed south
on China Lake Blvd on our own...knowing something was wrong...but what?
Fortunately Judy kept watching her cell phone for messages...and sure
enough...Anne called and left one!!!! So we turned around and met the
group leaving Denny's. |
|
We
could see the fog off in the distance to the south...toward HWY15...and
knew it'd be cool-to-cold. Anne...with her heated grear...was toasty warm. It was really nice in the garage...so Don talked Judy out of using her new heated vest and gloves! Not a smart move on Don's part!!!!!! |
|
Lunch
was great at Tom's
Farm Old Fashioned Hamburgers in Corona, CA! There is more to Tom's than hamburgers -- e. g., very nice setting, wine tasting room, train, etc!... |
|
Maureen
and Chris Toftner joined us on their Cherry Red Gold Wing. Sometimes Harley riders don't remember that when you're riding a two wheeler "...it's all rid'n...." |
|
Josh
taking any excuse to play with Deb's butt!!! |
|
San
Diego from the Coronado Bridge! |
|
Coronado
Island from the Coronado Bridge |
|
On
Coronado Island...riding toward our El Cordova Hotel...across the steet
from the famous Hotel Del Coronado (where we watched the sun go down Saturday evening). |
|
Spanish
Moss? |
|
The
Brigantine was our Satruday evening dinning location! Wait 'til you see Kathy and MaryAnn we met and hosted Harley rides for after dinner!!!! |
|
The
Hotel Del Coronado on the beach across from our El Cordova Hotel |
|
Immediately
after checking into our hotel... Wade led the group to The Midway Aircraft Carrier for a great tour! |
|
Judy
about to shed her heavier gloves so she can work her camera |
|
Anne
took this picture of Judy taking pictures!!!! |
|
Anne
got this great shot of San Diego from the Coronado Bridge...on our way
to The Midway. |
|
Can
you make out the outline of The Midway beyond the idelic view of the grass
and fall trees? |
|
These
are the industrial strength sailor/Marine's eye views of the Midway! |
|
Barb
and... |
|
...Judy
looking for the Midway's men! |
|
Ah
ha! MEN!... |
|
Don
first looking this way... |
|
...then
that way...with the others! ;) |
|
The
Fresnel Lens throws a fan-shaped beam that guides aircraft onto the carrier. The tilt of the fan beam is adjusted for the ship's roll in the ocean...and for the pilot's height above the tail hook which depends on the type of aircraft he's flying. |
|
On
the Bridge with Primary Flight Controls |
|
For
those who work on base...this is the ancestor to NMCI ;) |
|
You
guessed it! A porthole. |
|
Rex
and Wade...on the Bridge |

|
Oh

|
Both
born the same year! |
|
Dinner
Friday at the Mexican restaurant attached to the El Cordova Hotel courtyard. First two on the left are Bobbie and Bruce, Cheryl and Wade's San Diego friends. |

An evening relaxing in the El Cordova's courtyard |

Six miles to
Julian! ---> |
|
Apple Pie at
Mom's in Julian |
|
I think Mom's
in Julian makes approximately 600 apples pies a day! |
|
On the one hand...this is hard to imagine... |
|
"Mine?"
;) |
|
Up up we go
to 5,500-feet to the Palomar
Observatory! |
|
We passed at
least a dozen old vintage cars coming down from the Palomar |
|
Sunset from
the Hotel Del Coronado -- Saturday evening |
|
Wade and others
claim to have seen the "green flash" as the sun slips below
the waves |
|
Saturday dinner
at The Brigantine...just a couple of doors from our El Cordova Hotel |
|
Cheryl and Wade's
son, Scott, does or did work at the Brigantine...and this is one of his
pretty workmates. And this was also Scott's first day to skydive...and he loved it. |

|
On the sidewalk
in the cool moist air after dinner at the Brigantine...we met some attractive
women. Of course...Judy, Anne and Cheryl spontaneouisly let it be known
that they're Harley babes! And they try to fix them up with our unmarried
biker, Rex!!!! |
|
Tough...Rex.
This gorgeous lady turns out to me married. sigh |
|
But this pretty
lady is Kathy, a teacher, and is unmarried. In case you don't know...teachers can really be A LOT OF FUN!!!!! |
|
And this is
Kathy's pretty blonde friend, MaryAnn. |
|
Kathy and MaryAnn
indeed |
|
MaryAnn rode
with Rex |
|
And Kathy rode
with Wade |
|
Meanwhile...Cheryl
and Dennis share a cigar...as Judy looks on with a huge smile! |
|
No one was happier for Kathy and MaryAnn than Judy! |
|
And back at
the El Cordova courtyard.... |
|
Look at the
hotel masonary, tile, plants, etc.... |
|
Breakfast at
Bino's Coffee House adjacent to the El Cordova |
