Breakfast Ride to Whitney Portal

What a wonderful breakfast
ride to Whithney Portal...taking the windy historic road thru the Alabama
Hills west of Lone Pine. Temperatures were ideal...and winds a mere breeze
now and then!
The road thru the Alabama
Hills isn't very well maintained...but the view is spectacular.
It's a fairly steep climb
on a good road to the Portal area where the little restaurant nestles
beside the tiny lake stocked with trout (you'll see)!!!
The view south along
the Owens Valley is breathtaking from the Whitney road.
New construction in the
Portal area.
There's always a place
to park at the portal (knock on wood!!).
One would think Pat and
Rollin were anti-social...having a parking spot all to themselves! Is
Pat raising her nose in the air????
That's Cheryl and Dwight
heading toward the restaurant on the other side of the tiny portal lake.
Now...Pat and Rollin
look pretty darn happy here.. The great out-of-doors usually brings out
the best in people.
It's hard to believe...but
we didn't manage to get a clear picture of the little portal restaurant
itself...only this view of the side outdoor picnic table area. sigh
You can see some of the
restaurant in the background. You order inside...pick up your food...and
find a place to sit. You'll be entertained by Jay birds and ground squirrel
critters looking for handouts. The Portal is famous for their pancake
breakfasts...which spill over their 10-inch diameter plates. Ummm good!
Oooooo...that's one mad
jay...watching the little critter swipe the pancake. Look at those wings
flap!
It's so relaxing beside
the little Portal lake.
But wait! Who's that
Harley dude with a backpackers fishing rod across the pond????
It's Barry...fishing!
And Barry seems to know
what he's doing...having caught one on a spinner in no time!
For Barry...being a good
sport means catch and release...having had his fun!
If you look past Judy...and
across the pond...you'll see the faint image of Portal restaurant in the
background.
From high on the big
rock beside the pond...there's a good view of the fish.
Mt. Whitney water fall
nearby.
Paul and Dave all smiles!

She's just on loan, Paul!
So mom! Tell me again
what a "Biker Babe" is?
Hey...dad! When's my
next birthday? I'm ready for my first Harley!
Heading home...with full
tummies...and lots of good memories and pictures in hand!
